We lost because we are small

Japan, like the USA bowed out the the 2006 World Cup in germany a little too early, both teams surprising many by thier lacklustre play.

The American team showed some true grit but couldn't create enough scoring opportunities. Other teams were also just too good. So they went home after the first round. Too bad. Well they need to analyze what went wrong and try to improve upon it next time.

Why did the Japan team go home early? According to a lot of people here it was because "other teams are bigger." This is a reoccurring theme in japan of "We are a small poor island nation with tiny bodies, few natural resources and beset by disasters but despite these obstacles, thanks to our strong spirit were able to overcome and create a nice country that, though comfortable, is by no means rich. This is unlike other countries where wealth and success or war and famine just sort of fell out of the sky."

So I went to the FIFA official home page and checked some stats. What i found surprised even this skeptic.
