World Cup

First of all, I just have to say that you wouldn't believe how many people ( a week into the football WorldCup) are STILL asking me if the USA even has a team in it. I know we're not a soccer/football powerhouse, but come on! And then when I say that we have a team there people usually say "Ah yeah, but you guys don't like soccer." Besides that fact that Mr. Spock would raise an eyebrow at the 'logic' this is coming from japanese people. If a Brazilian said it I can see thier point, but soccer is not the number one game here either.

ANYWAY, Japan had it's first game a few days ago. They lost to Australia, well they were trounced actually. Here's a synopsis (note: I really dont care which side won, but this is just what happened, ok, like you'd see in the sports section of a newspaper.)

Australia put lots of pressure on Japan for most of the first half. Then after 25 minutes Japan scored a goal. It was a strange goal: the Aussie goalie was in a strange position, he was maybe fouled, and the balljust kind of bounced in. One of those "Was that a goal?" goals.

The Japanese confidence shot up and they turned things around and put lots of pressure on t he Aussies. Both teams had a few shots, the Australians couldnt seem to get coordinated. Then in the latter quarter or so of the game, the Japanese seemed worn out and the Australians put in some star substitutes. The Australians then scored a decisive goal with just a few minutes left, the Japanese team ell apart and the Australians scored 2 more goals in the next few minutes. It went from 1-0 to 1-3 in the last few minutes.

Having watched the USA v. Italy game, I can understand why some people wonder if we have a team.

The refs certainly didn't think so.

They thought we had a nice set of arms to pin red and yellow cards to.
